Genesis: Beginnings

October 9, 2016

My weekly Bible study at The Packinghouse, in Redlands, California, is beginning a study in the Book of Genesis next week. I can't wait! I love Genesis! And so, I was thinking maybe some of you do too! Now, I know that I have been away from blogging for quite a while, so what I'm thinking is that I will post something from my messages each week on this wonderful book.

To begin with, I want to share just a few gems about the book overall:

Chapters 1-11 set the stage ... in fact, it's been said that these chapters of Genesis set the stage and hold the key to our understanding of the entire Bible! These chapters have been called the "story behind the story." I love something I read this week, it said, "Within these few chapters, God reveals Himself to us: He is the Creator, the loving Father, the Provider, and a just Judge." In these 11, chapters we learn about: Creation, Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and the Flood, and the Tower of Babel.

The second section of Genesis, Chapters 12-50, has been called: "The Times of the Patriarchs." And in these chapters, we'll see the beginning of the story of Redemption, as we study the lives of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.

Because I love biographies, I absolutely love the stories of these men, especially, for me, Abraham and Joseph. We can learn so much through the lives of the great men and women of God ... so get ready to be blessed as we consider their lives and their stories in the weeks ahead.

In the Preface of his commentary on Genesis, John Phillips says this: "Genesis is the opening crescendo of Scripture, for God does not begin the book with a timid, tentative note or two. He begins it with the thunder of drums as worlds leap out of nowhere to populate the skies. He begins it with a clash of symbols as the human race falls into sin. He begins it with a blare of trumpets heralding the inundation of a world."

Does that sound exciting? It does to me. So, let's enter into the world, as seen through the lens of Genesis!

Several of these points came from my study of Halley's Bible Commentary.
